WASHINGTON, DC – The Reform Institute today commended House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Ranking Member Peter King (R-NY) for designating May as “Resilience Month” for the Committee. The Institute, a non-partisan public policy organization, will be participating in the series of Committee hearings that will examine resilience this month.

“The focus on resilience by the House Homeland Security Committee demonstrates that building a resilient nation is a national priority that transcends partisan politics,” stated Reform Institute Executive Director Cecilia Martinez. “As a leading voice for promoting resilience in our nation’s homeland security, economic and energy policy, the Reform Institute believes that policymakers must look to the private sector for models and ‘best practices’ including redundancy and continuity of operations plans, as wall as risk assessment strategies. Forthcoming Institute publications will explore resilience as it pertains to economic growth and energy security and efficiency.”

Today’s hearing before the full Committee on “The Resilient Homeland – Broadening the Homeland Security Strategy” will commence the month-long focus on the issue. Reform Institute Senior Advisor and CenTauri Solutions, LLC Managing Partner Robert W. Kelly will testify before the Committee’s Subcommittee on Border, Maritime and Global Counterterrorism tomorrow, May 7, at a hearing on “Assessing the Resiliency of the Nation’s Supply Chain.” Mr. Kelly authored the recent Institute white paper, Chain of Perils: Hardening the Global Supply Chain And Strengthening America’s Resilience.

“Simply stated, resilience is the ability to rapidly respond to and recover from a catastrophic event,” according to Mr. Kelly. “Enhancing resilience recognizes that not every disaster can be averted. It is imperative that our national security policy place as much attention to resilience as it does to prevention so that we employ the proper resources towards preparedness and contingency planning. I am pleased that the House Homeland Security Committee will be addressing resilience and honored to appear before the Subcommittee.”

The Reform Institute recently hosted a national symposium in New York City on Building a Resilient Nation: Enhancing Security, Ensuring a Strong Economy that brought corporate leaders and industry experts together to discuss private sector efforts towards resilience. The Institute will soon release a report with findings and recommendations based on the proceedings of the forum.
